In many countries around the world, rural people are moving to cities, so the population in the countryside is decreasing.
Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?
This task has two parts connected with the linker ‘so,’ which signals that our essay should consider both parts: the impact of migration on both rural areas and urban centers. In other words, when rural people emigrate to cities, how will this affect their villages? What influence will this have on cities? Are these effects positive and negative?
The impact on rural areas might concern farming. Traditionally, rural people engage in various forms of agriculture. With the rural population dwindling, this industry will suffer, which will adversely affect all. The shortage of wheat, rice, or animals can result in food insecurity and dependence on foreign suppliers.
However, this is not the only negative aspect. As the population of urban areas increases, the pressure on natural resources increases. More people will need energy, water, and food, causing problems such as natural resource depletion.
Moreover, this development can contribute to urban sprawl. To accommodate a larger population, the demand for housing will exceed the supply in the real estate market. As a result, cities will have to expand from all flanks and crawl into the countryside, damaging natural elements.
Can we just write about the negative aspect, as I did before? The answer to this question is not easy. In the question, “Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?” there is the linker ‘or.’ This means I can say it is all negative. Or I can write an essay about this trend’s positive aspects. Some people might write about both sides and give weight to one side as in the following:
On the other hand, immigration from rural areas promotes equality in access to high-quality services and products. People far from urban centers often have humble access to mediocre facilities, products, and services. This is partly because jobs in remote areas are less appealing to the skilled workforce, and products of high quality have better markets in cities where people can afford them. Therefore, the increased population mobility toward cities can ensure the inclusivity of more people in better services and products.

Whether to discuss both positive and negative aspects depends partly on our knowledge of the topic. If we lack knowledge, it may not be wise to wait for ideas from both sides. With limited time, if we have sufficient understanding of, for example, the negative aspects, we should write about them.
